How is this rate calculated?

It is the share of candidates who sat the brevet (the national exam French students take at the end of middle school, at about age 15) and passed it at the latest session, all of the town’s middle schools combined (public and state-contracted private schools, general and vocational tracks), according to results published by the French Ministry of Education. Pass rates depend heavily on the students each school takes in; town pages also show each middle school’s value added, which accounts for this. Only towns with at least two middle schools are ranked, so that the ranking compares towns rather than individual schools.
