How is the pass rate calculated?

It is the share of candidates who sat the brevet, the national exam French students take at the end of middle school, at about age 15, at the session shown, and passed it, as published by the French Ministry of Education (rates are rounded). Only schools with 50 or more candidates are ranked. Pass rates depend heavily on the students each school takes in; value added, ranked separately, takes this into account.

What is value added?

Value added, calculated by the French Ministry of Education, compares a school’s pass rate with the rate that could be expected given its students’ profile (age, social background, prior attainment): +5 means five points above that expected rate, −5 five points below. It measures what the school adds, not the level of its students.
