Évry-Courcouronnes, a prefecture born of a new town and a merger
Prefecture of the Essonne and the most populous town in the department, Évry-Courcouronnes is a "new commune" created on January 1, 2019 through the merger of Évry and Courcouronnes, two towns that already formed the heart of the same new town.
A large city built in a few decades
A small rural town until the 1960s, Évry was chosen in the 1960s to host the prefecture of the new Essonne department and one of the new towns of the Paris region. Within a generation came the Agora, a large shopping center, the University of Évry, the Genopole, devoted to genetics and biotechnology, and the Cathedral of the Resurrection, designed by the architect Mario Botta. Évry-Courcouronnes remains a young town, dense at its center and bordered by the Seine and green spaces, with a population that keeps growing.
