Troyes, historic capital of Champagne
Capital of the Aube department and its most populous town, Troyes was the seat of the Counts of Champagne and, in the Middle Ages, the site of great fairs that drew merchants from all over Europe. Its old town, whose layout recalls the shape of a champagne cork, has kept many half-timbered houses.
A great knitwear city
From the 18th to the 20th century, Troyes was the French capital of hosiery: the manufacture of stockings, socks and underwear gave rise to brands known throughout the country and attracted thousands of workers. The decline of textiles brought the population down; the city reinvented itself through retail, with factory outlet stores that draw visitors from far away, heritage tourism centered on the cathedral and churches with remarkable stained glass, and higher education. On a compact territory, Troyes remains dense, at the center of a larger urban area.
