Antibes, the second-largest city in the Alpes-Maritimes

Neither a prefecture nor a subprefecture, Antibes is nonetheless the second most populous town in the Alpes-Maritimes, ahead of Cannes and behind Nice. Founded by the Greeks as Antipolis and fortified by Vauban against the County of Nice, it brings together within a single territory the old town, Cap d'Antibes and the seaside resort of Juan-les-Pins.

A large city between the sea and a technology park

The size of Antibes stems from its coastline, its Port Vauban, one of the great marinas of the Mediterranean, and above all from Sophia Antipolis, Europe's leading technology park, created in 1969 and located partly within the commune: thousands of engineers and researchers work there. Tourism, with the Picasso Museum housed in the Château Grimaldi and the Juan-les-Pins jazz festival, rounds out an economy that attracts both working people and retirees. Its population swells considerably every summer with the influx of visitors.
