La Seyne-sur-Mer, the second-largest town in the Var
The second most populous town in the Var department, behind Toulon, La Seyne-sur-Mer occupies the western shore of the Toulon harbor. Neither a prefecture nor a subprefecture, it owes its size to its role in the Toulon urban area and to its industrial history.
From shipyards to tourism
For more than a century, La Seyne-sur-Mer lived off its shipyards, which employed thousands of workers and built warships and ocean liners until they closed in 1989. The town has since turned to tourism and services, building on its assets: the neighboring Saint-Mandrier peninsula, the Tamaris district and its villas, Les Sablettes beach and Fort Balaguier. The former shipyard grounds have been redeveloped into a park and a waterfront district. Its population has kept growing, driven by the appeal of the Var coast and the proximity of Toulon.
