Montauban, a prefecture with a vast territory
The prefecture of the Tarn-et-Garonne department and its most populous town, Montauban is one of the oldest bastides (planned medieval towns) in France, founded in 1144 on the banks of the Tarn by the Count of Toulouse. Its Place Nationale, lined with brick arcades, and its Pont-Vieux bear witness to these medieval origins.
A large rural town growing with Toulouse
The birthplace of the painter Ingres, a large part of whose work is held by the Ingres-Bourdelle museum, Montauban was a Protestant stronghold in the 16th century. Its territory, one of the largest of any prefecture in mainland France, takes in many hamlets and large areas of farmland and orchards, which gives it a very low density for a town of its importance. Located about fifty kilometers from Toulouse, connected by the A20 highway and by train, it benefits from the growth of the Toulouse area: its population has been rising steadily for several decades.
