Amiens, a major city of Hauts-de-France

Prefecture of the Somme and historic capital of Picardy, Amiens is the second-largest city in Hauts-de-France after Lille. It grew around the Somme River, its canals and one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, then with textiles and, in the 20th century, the tire and household appliance industries.

A central city in a rural department

In a department of small towns, Amiens alone accounts for a large share of the Somme's population and jobs, which gives it exceptional weight as a central city. Its territory includes the hortillonnages, floating gardens spread over several hundred hectares, which lowers its density compared with cities of similar size. An hour from Paris, Lille and the sea, with a university and a teaching hospital (CHU), the city keeps a stable population, sustained by students and public administration.
