Drancy, a major city in the northeastern Paris suburbs

Drancy, the sixth-largest town in Seine-Saint-Denis by population, is a dense town in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, next to Le Bourget and Bobigny. Neither a prefecture nor a subprefecture, it grew with the rapid urbanization of the first half of the 20th century.

From housing subdivisions to the Cité de la Muette

A farming village until the end of the 19th century, Drancy was covered between the wars with subdivisions of detached houses and with one of the first large-scale social housing developments in France, the Cité de la Muette, built in the early 1930s. From 1941 to 1944, this same complex became the Drancy internment camp, from which most of the convoys deporting the Jews of France departed; a memorial and the Bobigny deportation station preserve that memory. After the war, the construction of new apartment buildings further increased the population of a town that is now very dense, mixing detached houses and apartment blocks.
