The social position index (IPS), calculated by the French Ministry of Education for each middle school (collège), sums up the social background of students’ families based on their parents’ occupations: the higher it is, the more advantaged, on average, the backgrounds students come from. It measures neither student achievement nor the quality of teaching. The value ranked is the simple average of the town’s public and state-contracted private middle schools; only towns with at least two middle schools are ranked, so that the ranking compares towns rather than individual schools.
