Colombes, a major city in the bend of the Seine

Neither a prefecture nor a subprefecture, Colombes is nonetheless one of the four most populous towns in the Hauts-de-Seine. It occupies the heart of the northern bend of the Seine, between Nanterre, Gennevilliers, Asnières-sur-Seine, Bois-Colombes and La Garenne-Colombes, about ten kilometers from Paris.

From factory town to dense residential city

Colombes grew with 20th-century industry, including the Kléber tire factory, and with the arrival of working-class families who came to work in the bend of the Seine. The town is also known for its Stade Yves-du-Manoir, the Olympic stadium of the 1924 Games, renovated to host field hockey at the 2024 Games. On a modest-sized territory, it is now home to a large population: its density, comparable to that of major cities such as Lyon, illustrates how the inner Paris suburbs were built, with detached houses, apartment buildings and former industrial sites sharing every hectare.
