A functional area (aire d’attraction des villes) is a group of communes made up of a center of population and employment and its commuter belt: the communes where at least 15% of workers have a job in the center (INSEE definition, 2020 zoning). It measures the reach of a city beyond its built-up area, much like a metropolitan area.

The population of each functional area is the sum of the official populations of its communes (total population in force in 2026). Each name links to its detailed page, in French.
